Kwara seals off 15 dilapidated houses in Ilorin

The Kwara Government on Thursday sealed off 15 dilapidated buildings within Ilorin metropolis to prevent collapse.

The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Bode Olayemi, told newsmen in Ilorin, shortly after inspecting some of the houses in company of officials of the Town Planning and Development Authority.

“Owners and occupants of these buildings in Ilorin metropolis have been advised to as a matter of urgency vacate the premises.

“It is the responsibility of government to protect the lives and property of its citizenry,” he said.

The commissioner called on developers to maintain set standards in building houses and avoid using substandard materials.

Olayemi warned that any developer who failed to follow the directive of government, will be sanctioned and made to

face the full wrath of the law.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of TPDA, Alhaji Raimi Adeoti, said, “it is our responsibility to mark buildings that are not habitable for human beings

“What we have done so far is to call them to order, also remove them from these buildings and call the attention of

the property owners to repair such defects on the structures,

“In cases were the structures cannot be repaired, we will insist they demolish the building and build a solid structure

that will be habitable for human beings”, he said.

The inspection team had inspected dilapidated houses in Edun, Lower Taiwo, Isale Aluko, Ojagbooro, Amule areas of Ilorin.
